If you’re planning your own wedding at The Monastery, you’re likely looking for a photographer who already knows the space, the light and the flow of the day here in Gorton. That’s exactly how we approach every Monastery wedding – calm, organised and fully tuned into the venue.
We captured Eleanor & Adam’s celebration across the nave, cloisters and outdoor spaces of the venue. A few highlights: the sun-filtered light streaming through leaded windows in the nave, the bridal party portraits under the vaulted arches, and the evening reception in the beautifully restored setting.
With 18+ years of experience and over 200 real weddings photographed, we know how to keep things calm and organised at large venues like The Monastery.
The gallery below showcases how we use natural and ambient light, mindful of the historic architecture, to create elegant imagery that tells the full story of the day.

To help you get a feel for the full journey — from first enquiry to delivered gallery — here are a few short case studies based on weddings we’ve photographed.
Adam and Eleanor’s wedding at The Monastery in Manchester was a perfect blend of elegance, personality, and genuine connection — the kind of day that showcases everything wonderful about a Manchester city centre celebration. Earlier this year, they brought together not just close friends and family, but also a vibrant group from Urmston Musical Theatre, where they were first introduced to me as their wedding photographer through my work with the company.
The day began with groom prep at the Midland Hotel, one of the city’s most iconic locations. Adam, the more outgoing half of the pair, was surrounded by his closest friends, filling the room with laughs, banter, and the typical last-minute scramble to get ties straight and jackets perfect. It set exactly the right tone before heading over to the ceremony.Their service in the Great Nave was elegant, heartfelt, and beautifully understated. The UMT guests added their trademark theatre-family warmth — supportive, spirited, and full of good humour. You could feel their connection to the couple throughout, making the room feel full of shared history and genuine affection.
After the ceremony, we made the most of the stunning architecture with portraits in the Cloisters and outside around The Monastery’s gardens. The couple slipped into the photography effortlessly — relaxed, happy, and trusting the process completely. Even under typical Manchester light, the venue worked its magic, giving us a set of images that felt both timeless and personal.
A standout moment was the large group shot in the courtyard-style garden — a mix of enthusiastic theatre friends, family, and long-term mates all squeezed together, laughing and reacting in a way you simply can’t script. The speeches later carried the same energy: funny, heartfelt, and filled with stories only the closest circle could tell. And the evening reception lifted the whole atmosphere even further with a live band bringing true celebration energy to the historic venue.
What made the day special wasn’t any single moment — it was the opportunity to capture the full journey from city-centre preparations at the Midland Hotel through to the final celebrations in one of Manchester’s most breathtaking wedding venues. The images came out beautifully and genuinely reflected who Adam and Eleanor are as a couple.

“I met James at my friend’s wedding at The Monastery, and I loved how professional, friendly, and calm he was throughout the whole day. He made everything feel effortless. I was so impressed that I booked him for my own wedding next year. I’m genuinely thrilled he was available, and I can’t wait for him to capture our day.”

As a regular photographer to the Monastery, we’ve photographed multiple weddings at The Monastery (Gorton Monastery), so we’re fully aligned to the venue layout, lighting conditions and timings. This means we know exactly where to position key shots, how to use the dramatic architecture to its full potential, and how to work discretely within the venue’s event schedule.
The nave is a standout backdrop, especially with its soaring arches and soft filtered light. The cloisters, external steps, garden areas and the balcony spaces also offer excellent portrait opportunities — giving you a mix of dramatic architectural shots and natural, relaxed imagery.
Yes — the interior is excellent for low-light photography thanks to its height, window placement and atmospheric ambience. We bring professional low-light equipment and make use of available natural and ambient lighting so your images retain their character without looking artificially lit.
The Monastery is one of the best wet-weather wedding venues in Manchester. The cloisters and internal arches provide sheltered, elegant portrait areas, so rain never compromises the photography plan. We always complete a pre-wedding walkthrough so we have a clear wet-weather contingency in place.
For smooth flow, we recommend around 20–30 minutes for family groups and 15–25 minutes for couple portraits. The layout of The Monastery allows us to transition between locations quickly, meaning we capture everything you need without disrupting your guest experience.
